SAUDADE 🫶🏼

Mijn favoriet Portugees woord dat moeilijk exact te vertalen is, maar het beschrijft een diepe emotie van verlangen of gemis — zoals bijvoorbeeld een plek, of een gevoel.

Mijn saudade voelt voor mij als thuis, ver weg.
Portugal heeft mijn hart gestolen, zachtjes, zonder dat ik het doorhad.
Het zit niet in grote dingen, maar in de kleine momenten:
de gladde straattegels onder mijn voeten,
de gevels vol kleur en karakter,
de vriendelijkheid in een onbekende glimlach,
de wirwar van kleine straatjes waar je liever verdwaalt dan de weg vindt.
De warmte van de zon die je omarmt,
het ruisen van de zee, …
Dat is mijn saudade.💙

My saudade feels like home, far away.
Portugal stole my heart — gently, without me even noticing.
It’s not in the big things, but in the little moments:
the smooth cobblestones beneath my feet,
the colorful facades full of character,
the kindness in a stranger’s smile,
the maze of narrow streets where you’d rather get lost than find your way.
The warmth of the sun wrapping around you,
the sound of the sea in the distance…
That is my saudade. 💙
